Meet Marlon, Essense of Australia Designer Extraordinare, at Formally Yours

We love fresh ideas, creative visions, and new styles.  Brides come to us with pinterest boards, and website photos sharing their dream of their perfect wedding dress.  It’s our job to make their dream come true, and in order to do so we must carry the appropriate designs in our Bridal Salon.  It’s important to us to capture the latest trends and styles that the brides are looking for, therefore designers are our lifeline to remaining current and relevant in the wedding dress industry.

Meet Marlon, one of the designers for Essense of Australia.  He is scheduled to be at Formally Yours, June 26^th and June 27^th.  In anticipation of his visit, we scheduled a phone interview and I was intrigued about what he had to say about his career on the wedding dress design team for Essense.

Marlon hails from Brazil where he grew up with a father who was a professional tailor.  Growing up around fabric and thread and clothing gave him his initiation into the fashion world.  At an early age Marlon knew that fashion was his calling.  He became interested in designing and pursued his passion at The Massachusetts School of Art and Design.  His first love was bridal and evening  couture.  After a few years of bridal and evening, he did a short stint with ready to wear, but soon, his true love came calling and he once again began designing for bridal where he continues his creative calling.

At Essense of Australia, he is 1 of 4 designers, and he designs for all 3 divisions, Martina Liana, Essense and Stella York.  His designs sell all over the world, and through the 3 different lines within the Essense of Australia brand, he feels like he has the ability to cater to all brides.  He is a very hands-on designer who secretly visits stores to seek bride’s desires and interests as he loves to design from her point of view.   In addition, he turns to the red carpet for inspiration for his designs.  He realizes that women of all ages are heavily influenced by what they see on air and in magazines.  His search for the perfect design also includes his thirst for new finishes, cuts and techniques.

Being Brazilian, Marlon appreciates the female figure and designs dresses that move gracefully over a woman’s shape.  He understands the desire for brides to be beautiful and elegant but to feel a little sexy.  And, he conquers this mission by starting off with a shell of a dress, draping it over a body and adding fabrication, lace and the optional beading according to how the dress drapes and flows.  Each of his designs starts out hand- made and individually designed before it hits the factory. 

As fashion goes, it is important for a designer to have an identity.  His is his love of fabric and how it behaves.  His personal favorite designs are the ones created from crepe.  The drape of crepe fabric falls gently and feels sexy on the body.  Lace and lace placement are also very crucial in Marlon’s designs.  And, as he thoughtfully builds the creation from the inside out, he allows the process to be organic.  He may start with a specific idea for a design, but is open to freely changing the shape of the dress as it comes to life.  The key attributes to each design take place piece by piece as he goes along.  So, the finished product is truly a work of art built from the brilliant mind of an authentic artist.

Does It Really Take A Village?

When it comes to celebrating your marriage, it is natural to want to include all the important people in your life in the wedding preparations. It is important to remind yourself throughout the process that, at the end of the day, you will walk down one aisle, to one man, in one wedding dress. Here at Formally Yours, we believe in good team work. For such a defining purchase, it can be a life saver to have a trustworthy confidant to aide in the decision making process.  It absolutely crushes us to see a bride, beautifully dressed and adorned, feeling defeated, ugly, and unsatisfied because her entourage has overpowered her own voice and vision.

Brides, you have been chosen! Your fiancé has decided that he wants to spend the rest of his life with YOU. Similarly, when it comes time for you to choose your shopping entourage, consider carefully who is going to support you best. Whose fashion sense to you value? Who will be there with cries of joy to help you celebrate? Who will faithfully remember that you and you alone will be the girl wearing this wedding dress? Be aware of who you are. If you are someone who tends to want to please the people despite your own feelings, be careful not to bring people who might push you away from your plans or who you might feel pressured to please above yourself. Do not feel the need to include everyone is the wedding dress decision. There is a multitude of other things you will need help with in preparing for your wedding that can be shared with the people important to you.

Entourage, you have been chosen! The bride has decided that she wants you to support her during her search for her wedding dress. Consider carefully the things you say and do during this time. First and foremost remember always that she is the bride. She is wearing the dress. She gets to make the decision. You have the honor of being a part of the day she picks out her wedding dress. You get to support and love her through the process.

So does it really take a village? Well, maybe. Just remember to make sure your village is populated with loving, supportive, and encouraging people.

A Dream Wedding Dress

           Upon first glance I was in love. The more I looked, the more I loved. Everything I saw, I was drawn to. In the words of the immortal John Lennon, “To know her is to love her.” Of course I was wondering how this was possible. Just days before I had seen an Inbal Dror dress in a magazine priced exactly how a couture designer dress should be. I would deal with it. And then, like an answer to an unasked prayer, we received a WTOO two-piece bridal gown that looked so similar to the Inbal Dror design, I could not stop staring. The soft and warm rose color underneath the ornately beaded lace flowers on the bodice caught my heart in a skip of romance. The crystals and beading were perfectly enchanting, even spell-binding. The perfect sweetheart neckline cascaded gracefully with slight scalloping to a tastefully scooped low back. A clean and crisp ribbon of satin cinched at the waist to show off the smallest part of any woman’s figure. And the skirt! Oh, the skirt! Talk about fun. The organza tiers waterfall and gush cool elegance and high glamour. It is the perfect pairing with the extraordinary bodice. New Location in Cumming GA

We are so excited to announce the opening of our second location of Formally Yours in Cumming,
GA.  After 31 amazing years in Lilburn, we decided it is time to expand our business and spread our wings to Cumming, GA.  After move in day, on February 14th, we opened our doors for business and haven't looked back.  We are so overwhelmed and overjoyed with our warm welcome!  Everyone is so helpful and excited about our arrival.  And, most importantly they are loving Formally Yours, Cumming.

It definitely helps that we have a history of dressing girls since 1982.  And, word of mouth is our best advertisement.  Everytime a customer walks in the door they tell us that a friend told them to come and see us.  We love customer referrals, because it is proof that we are doing something right!

Formally Yours Photo Shoot

On a beautiful Sunday in July, we took off to Madison for a photo shoot.  Our crew was excited and full of ideas.  We started early to catch the morning sun and to beat the heat.  The location was picturesque with cool architectural highlights, romantic rustic venues, and quaint gazebos.  We even took a tour of a museum and the opportunity was perfect for some cool shots. 

As the day progressed our creative juices really began to flow.  The husband and wife photography/creative team, Sara and Casey Giessen, had scoped the area and mapped out our game plan.  I, Cathy, the stylist, created all of the looks from hair and make-up to dress and accessories.  Scarlett, the eyes of the target market, kept the model, Savannah, happy and poised.  Hillary was our social media assistant and did an excellent job uploading pictures from the day.  Formally Yours was branching out, and we were all focused with a vision.

Approximate Shipping Dates and Delivery Dates

The most frequently asked question pertains to ship dates and delivery dates.  The most important thing to realize is that special orders take anywhere from 3-4 months for bridesmaids and 6-9 months for bridal.  And, as stated in previous blogs, when you know what you want, place the order.

Ladies, it takes time for these dresses to be manufactured overseas.  Very rarely, do the designers have ready made stock for their sample dresses.  This being said, each and every customer has to be educated in this area so that they know what to expect.

When we place the order we are given an APPROXIMATE shipping date.  The companies have a 10 day window in both directions, which means that it may ship out 10 days before or after the date they give us.  Delivery dates cannot be determined until UPS has the dresses in their posession.  At that time, they assign a tracking number to the order, and then, only then, do we have an official delivery date.

We want each and every customer to be excited and happy with their special orders.  Our goal is to keep the lines of communication open in order to avoid any confusion.  We invite you to call us with any questions you may have at any time.  We are here for you. New Wedding Dresses Arriving Daily

Hi Everyone! We just want you all to know that now is a wonderful time to shop for wedding dresses.  Everyday, new gowns from the Fall 2012 Collections arrive at Formally Yours.  It is like Christmas when the UPS man comes through our doors.  We eagerly open each and every box with anticipation of which gowns arrive on that given day.  So, if you want to find the perfect dress for your perfect occasion, hurry in to Formally Yours.

Not only are Fall 2012 wedding dresses coming, but Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom dresses as well as bridesmaids dresses are arriving.  We will post pictures as we display them in our showroom.  Shopping now, with all of these new arrivals, gives our Formally Yours customers the opportunity to purchase new dresses off of the rack.  And when a dress is purchased off of the rack, our customers feel more relief and less stress.

Be Prepared to make the Purchase

Today is tip Tuesday.  And, the tip for today is Be Prepared to make the Purchase.  The wedding plans are in full swing, and now it's time for everyone in the bridal party to find their dress for the Big Day.  Typically, the bride finds her dress first, followed by the bridesmaids, the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom.  So, ladies, when you leave the house, have your finances in order.  You may not think you will find your dress, but you never know.  It's like any other shopping experience when you least expect to find it, there it is.

This tip rings true for every single member of the bridal party.  Everyday, the question is asked,  "When do we need to place the order?".  You need to place the order the minute you realize you have found your dress.  Do not delay!  Actually, the bride should order her dress 9-12 months before the wedding, and the rest of the bridal party should place their orders 6 months before hand.  If you find it, and you love it, order it.  Time is of the essense during the wedding planning period.  Too many decisions are looming in the very near future, and it is a reassurance to know that your dresses are on their way.

So, before you begin, have your budget in mind, your money in hand, and your heart prepared to fall in love again (with a dress, not another groom of course).  And enjoy the experience!  Bridal fashion is fun and colorful and creative.  It is what you make it to be, and at Formally Yours we are here with experienced fashion consultants to guide your every wish and desire.  Be brave, be confident and be you.  You will be beautiful you on the wedding day.  We are committed to that dream.

Mother's Monday

Starting today, Formally Yours is committing to more frequent blogging.  We are celebrating our 30th Anniversary this month and realize that we have so much to offer our customers.  In addition to offering beautiful wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dresses and mother's dresses, we can offer sound advice based on our years of experience.   And today, and every monday, we want to offer some advice to our beautiful, generous and loving mothers of both the bride and groom.

Often times, woman seem to put themselves last.  They are so busy planning the wedding and taking care of everyone else's needs that they leave their need of the Mother of the Bride (MOB) or Mother of the Groom (MOG) dress until the very end as if they don't matter.  However, the reality is quite the opposite.  The MOB and MOG are very important to the entire wedding and wedding party, and they need to dress the part.  While the MOB is the main hostess at the reception and responsible for making certain everyone's accomodated, the MOG is important too.  Both women are required to join people together at the joyous occasion and to be photographed along the way. 

It can be an overwhelming experience if allowed, but shopping at Formally Yours for your mother's dress can be enjoyable.  First, we ask the specifics of the wedding.  Time, location and number of guests are very important facts to note when determining a style.  Second, we ask the color pallete of the wedding. And, we also like to ask if the mother has a favorite color she likes to wear.  Next, we ask if the dress is supposed to be long or short.  Once we gather all of this information, we begin to pull different styles for each mother to try on.  Third, the mother begins to model each design. 

The process is in full swing, and now it is time to begin eliminating some styles and to revisit others.  After the final decision of style and color is made, measurements are taken and a size is agreed upon. When a mother looks beautiful and feels comfortable, then the choice is clear.  Do not be afraid to confirm your decision and to "say yes to the dress".  Check this off of the list of things to do, and purchase your mother's dress. Formally Yours immediately places the order and it takes at least 3 MONTHS, yes 3 months for the dress to come in.  Thus, the importance of ordering sooner than later!

Mother of the Bride and Groom

Today, we received a beautiful shipment of Mother of the Bride and Groom dresses. We are so excited to carry the JADE and JADE COUTURE lines. Not only are they beautiful in design, they are versatile in color, fabrication and length. Each style that is sampled in our store can be redesigned to suit your personal needs. Of course, we love how they appear in our store, and purchasing off of the rack is actually the best option for you our customer.

Mothers need to realize that they are as important as the bride on the wedding day. Often times, mothers leave their shopping needs for last on their checklist. I understand why this happens. However, time is of the essense, and if in fact, you as the mother need to place a special order, it needs to be placed at least 5 months prior to the wedding date. At FORmally YOUrs we are here to assist you with the process. We adore our mothers and realize that it can be the most difficult shopping experience. With our knowledge, expertise and excellent selection, we make it a more enjoyable process.

Alteration Information

FORmally YOUrs is a full service bridal salon. Our mission is to assist you from beginning to end. When you purchase your wedding dress or ANY dress from FORmally YOUrs, we are here to make certain that your dress is sized, ordered, delivered and then altered to your figure. We are fortunate to have an extremely talented seamstress in-house.

You received a phone call that your FORmally YOUrs dress is in, and now it is time for you to come in, try it on and have it altered. Make an appointment to meet with Liliya. At the time of your appointment, we will greet you and retrieve your dress and place it in the alterations room. We will ask you to try it on, and when you are ready, Liliya will meet with you.

At this time, we encourage you to communicate with Liliya. Show her the places that are your "trouble spots", and she will pay special attention to those areas. In addition, she will pin you in the areas that are in obvious need, and again at this time, please do not hesitate to speak up and ask questions. Now is the time to voice any concerns you may have. FORmally YOUrs believes it is always easier to address them at the beginning.

Often times, FORmally YOUrs brides are concerned about the bustle of the wedding dress. Again, we like for you to have options. Typically, a bride has a choice between the French Bustle and the Traditional Bustle. The Traditional Bustle is folded over on top of the skirt of the bridal gown, whereas, the French Bustle tucks up and under the gown. The length of the train truly dictates which bustle is your best option. However, brides may have their own opinions. Liliya will listen to your ideas, but if she is concerned about the security of it, she will let you know. And at this time, you need to make the bustle style decision. Our main concern is that it is as far off of the floor as possible, and that it is as secure as possible. Also, keep in mind, that the bustle is all about function not necessarily fashion.

Now, on rare occasions, some brides have weight fluctuations. Please note that Liliya is gifted, but she is not a miracle worker. If for one reason or another you have a serious weight gain or loss before the wedding, try not to panic. Simply place a call into Liliya at FORmally YOUrs, schedule a refit and listen to her experienced and educated suggestions. She has great abilities and will work with you and your gown.

Alterations are a separate fee. FORmally YOUrs caps the fee FOR YOU in order to protect our customers from being over charged. At the time of your fitting, Liliya will discuss the price with you. There are no hidden costs after she reviews the pricing at the initial appointment. The only exception to this, is if you ask for something additional to be done to the gown that was not previously discussed. After she completes the first fitting and your receipt is handed to you, you have two payment options. You may either pay at that time with check or cash, or pay by cash only at the final fitting.
